Airline pilots tend to be healthier than the general population, largely due to the requirement to have medical evaluations every six months in order to fly. One day, not long ago, I was scheduled to operate as a crewmember on an international flight from the USA to Paris, France later that afternoon. To make a long story short, I made it to Paris. But ,with each passing hour, flying at thirty six thousand feet above the Atlantic Ocean, the pain seemed to get a little worse just sitting in the seat; it wouldn’t go away, it just lingered.
To complicate things a little more, I would have to fly back to the U.S. in a few days and undergo my annual FAA flight evaluation. I needed relief and I needed it fast. I don’t speak French and didn’t want to see a doctor unless it was absolutely necessary. In my mind, I felt that I could fix this myself.
Over the next three days, while stuck in my layover hotel room, I experimented with a wide array of techniques to escape some of the shooting pains that would pop up out of nowhere.
Finally, with one day to go before my return flight, I developed the precise sequence that reduced my low back discomfort by 95%. It wasn’t perfect but gave me a new lease on life.
Just in the nick of time. The flight home was great, no pain, and best of all, I passed my FAA evaluation, with no issues. After returning to my home, I applied those same techniques for a few minutes over the next two mornings and finally defeated every trace of the back pain that afflicted me for the previous week.
